The Facts About Lymphedema
Lymph drainage therapy aids in the recirculation of lymph, allowing faster healing, less infection. Swelling has long been a concern for physicians and their patients. Whether the swelling is due to plastic or reconstructive surgery, cancer surgery, orthopedic surgery, diabetes-related wounds, radiation or venous insufficiency, physical therapy can facilitate a more efficient reduction of this fluid. Lymphedema is an accumulation of lymphatic fluid causing abnormal swelling in the arms, legs, feet, breasts, abdomen, neck or head.
Lymphedema develops when lymphatic vessels are impaired or missing (primary) or when lymphatic vessels are damaged or lymph nodes are removed (secondary).
What is complete decongestive therapy, and how can it help you?
Lymphatic therapy is a proven, safe and effective method used to reroute excess fluid in the tissues back into normal circulation. There are no adverse side effects. Complete decongestive therapy consists of a gentle, hands-on massage used for manual lymph drainage, compression bandaging, compression stockings and sleeves, skin care and therapeutic exercise
to improve the flow of lymphatic fluid.
Patients report a number of benefits, including:
Reduction in edema and lymphedema of many origins
Regeneration of tissue, including burns, pre and postsurgical scars, wrinkles and stretch marks
Improved venous conditions, including stimulated lymph vessels and nodes
Alleviation of chronic pain, adiposis and cellulite tissue
